Technology Resources and Ideas on How to Use Them For ASL Instruction
Here are some different types of available technology and ideas on how to integrate them into American Sign Language instruction.
Social Media Sites
Students can create a fake Facebook profile for a famous Deaf person. Teachers can create a Facebook group to keep students informed of events and upcoming assignments. Facebook can also be used to post videos and discuss the meaning of said videos. Linked with the picture to the left is an article on 100 different ways to use Facebook in your classroom. |
Students can use Twitter to follow Deaf community news, politics, and trends. Teachers can create a "class hashtag" to share resources, remind of upcoming assignments or events, and answer student questions. Linked with the picture to the left is an article describing 50 ways Twitter can be used in your classroom. |
YouTube YouTube has many helpful qualities to the ASL instructor and student. Students can upload videos of themselves signing for projects. Teachers can subscribe to all student channels in order to organize homework and projects. Students can watch experienced signers and curate the best and worst of YouTube signers. |
Blogs
Blogging in the classroom There are many different options for student created blogs for example; Wordpress, Blogspot, Edublog Etc. Blogs are a great place for students to showcase their work. They are also a great place for them to connect with experts in the field, deaf people, and other students. I strongly recommend the use of blogs with American Sign Language students. |
Google Sheets/Docs/Slides
Create Graphs Using Google Sheets Have students collect data from each other in the target language, enter that data into Google Spreadsheets, create a chart or graph, and present their finding to the class in the target language. Each student can research a different topic so the class can learn more about each other. To the left is an example of a graph showing a class' favorite foods. ABC Excel has many ideas that students can use if they can not think of anything. |
Take Surveys Using Google Forms For Deaf Awareness Day, or awareness day of any minority culture, have the students create and send out a Google Form surveying their school, their co-workers or whoever about their knowledge of deaf language and culture. Then have them create graphs or charts and present them to the public, spreading awareness. |
